http://www.cehd.umn.edu/ssw/cascw/attributes/PDF/Students/IVE%20SeminarNoelke4-29-09.pdf

This website presented a lot of interesting facts:

Incidence Rates:

nChildren with disabilities were 1.7 times more likely to experience maltreatment compared to children without disabilities

n9% rate of maltreatment for children without disabilities vs. 31% rate for children with disabilities

nChildren with disabilities were 3.4% more likely to be abused

nRates of abuse among a sample of children with mental retardation and cerebral palsy was not higher than what is found in the general population of children.

nBoys with disabilities showed a greater likelihood of being neglected and physically abused compared to the non-disabled sample of abused children

nTwice as many boys with boys disabilities were victims of sexual abuse than what was expected on the basis of the non-disabled

  1. Wow, the incident rates are shocking! It is so sad that the population of children with disabilities receive such maltreatment.

I wonder if the incident rates are so high due to the lack of knowledge the people caring for the children with special needs have.

I know that I feel frustrated and mad when I don’t have the experience or knowledge needed to perform a task…I am more irritable when I don’t understand what I am doing. Maybe caregivers are becoming more vulnerable to abuse because they simply don’t know what they are doing. I just wonder if more support was provided to educate and train families and caregivers if these incident rates would be lower.

  2. I agree... In a lot of these instances I am wondering who is being held accountable???
I feel there are many factors that are attributing to these factors. It's sad but it's very true.
